As we move through this world with our own individual agenda, it can be hard to understand the journey of the other. Sometimes we believe that struggles are not unified and there is no commonality between us. Fortunately, Director Eric Metzgar captures a unique moment in time with his film A Once and Future Peace.
Growing up, movies were my escape. I've moved around 23 times, so leaving behind friends was no fun. It was devastating, so I turned to the world of movies to channel my grief. As a shy kid, hiding behind the world of books and movies was easier than facing the grief of losing friends over and over again.
What makes this process exciting is precisely that the answer is unknown. Sometimes I have a clear idea of what is needed, and I find it quickly. But when it becomes a matter of searching without knowing, and I do find a fitting gesture, statement, or texture that creates personality, it feels more like a discovery. A discovery of the brilliance that’s already there, waiting on patient eyes.
Like humans, movies can be more than one thing and have lives of their own. Some age better than others. However, the main difference between us, is that movies are immortal, or at least have the potential to be in our minds.
Cinema-going is a collective experience of surrender. Just like tribes would surrender to their gods during rituals and celebrations, the spectators surrender to the film, while surrendering to each other at the same time. We now come together in front of what is the modern fire, the new source of light: the cinema screen. Here is how and why cinemas will heal the wounds of COVID-19.
